Chandigarh, February 6
Giani Harpreet Singh, acting Jathedar of Akal Takht, today gave a call for restricting vulgar songs and said if required, the takht will intervene in the matter.
The Jathedar was in the city to attend a meeting of an alliance of Sikh organisations, which was formed to express solidarity with him.
He said vulgar songs and music were not good for any society. It was the government’s duty to enact strong laws to stop them. He said such songs spread filth in society, which corrupted young minds and destroyed their constructive thinking.
To a specific query whether the Akal Takht would issue any diktat on the issue, the Jathedar said though it was the duty of the government to stop this trend, they would do the needful if Sikh intellectuals felt there was requirement of any diktat from the takht.
Reacting to a controversy between the Akal Takht and Sikh preacher Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwala, he said the Akal Takht wanted the issue to be sorted out amicably with discussions. At present, he ruled out any possibility of excommunicating the preacher from the Sikh religion. An alliance of 64 Sikh oragnisations called the ‘World Committee for Coordination of Sikh Organisations’ on Thursday came together to express solidarity with Giani Harpreet Singh.
