Abohar, February 27

Even after the state government had on July 1, 2022 notified a ban on single-use plastic, hundreds of shopkeepers here continue to sell the same in plenty. The Apna Abohar Apni Abha NGO has so far organised more than one hundred camps in the past two years to motivate people bid adieu to single-use plastic but tonnes of such used material were found dumped even in the canal system.

To tighten the noose around the violators, the officials of the municipal corporation (MC) and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) jointly raided the Nai Abadi area on Tuesday and recovered banned polythene and disposables.

MC sanitary inspectors Jaswinder Singh and Iqbal Singh and PPCB SDO from Faridkot, Vishwas Singh, checked the grocery, confectionary, vegetable shops and disposable shops. About 40 kg of banned carry bags and disposables were seized.

MC Inspector Ashwini Miglani said that challans have been issued to 18 shops.

Mayor Vimal Thatai said that people can avoid the legal action by not using the banned plastic bags and disposables. If anyone has the stock then they should deposit it with the corporation, he added.
