Migrant snatches pistol from cop near Golden Temple, shoots self dead

Victim not identified yet; cops scanning CCTV cameras for clues

A migrant allegedly shot himself dead after snatching a pistol from a policeman deployed near Golden Temple on Sunday.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh said the victim, who was yet to be identified, was rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

“The victim did not have any identity proof, wallet or a mobile phone in his possession. Thus, his identity could not be ascertained immediately,” he said, adding further probe was on.

The incident took place around 7 am. The policeman from whom the victim snatched the pistol was identified as Ashwani Kumar. He was on duty near Golden Temple plaza.

The ADCP said the victim suddenly came to Kumar, snatched his pistol and shot himself in the head, leading to his immediate death. “All this happened in just a few seconds," said the ADCP.

He said the police were scanning CCTV cameras to track the victim’s movements to find clues about his identity.
