Patiala, April 17
Having contested for the first time and defeated strong contenders and former MLAs Surjit Singh Rakhra of the SAD and Rajinder Singh of the Congress, Samana MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra now wants to do all that has been left missing in the constituency for years.
TO FOCUS ON HEALTH
Previous MLAs didn’t work on the education and health fronts. In fact, our area has been lagging behind in services and infra in these sectors. There is excessive adulteration of food as well. We have to solve all such issues. Chetan Singh Jouramajra, Samana MLA
A farmer and businessman by profession, Jouramajra won the seat with a huge margin of 39,713 votes. He said he was given the party ticket by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal. “The big margin is of people who cast votes for their issues. We have to prove that they did cast their votes in the right direction.”
The AAP MLA has been associated with the party since 2013. He said, “I joined the party from Samana in 2013. We worked extensively to garner votes from villages in the area after which Dr Dharamvira Gandhi became the MP in 2014. Later, they made me the Patiala (rural) president.”
Remembering an incident in 2019 in which he briefly came into the limelight over a law and order issue, he said, “I was in Tarn Taran when, incidentally, I saw six youths trying to abduct a girl. I jumped into rescue her when they (youths) fired two shots at me.” Jouramajra suffered gunshots on his neck but later recuperated.
The MLA further said he had held meetings with the administration and the police and told them not to be lenient in the matter of drugs. “No one dealing with drugs should be let off at any cost,” he added. He said he also would work towards bringing the industry to Samana.
