Moga police rescue teenage girl from drug abuse, shift her to de-addiction centre
The incident came to light after a video clip surfaced online earlier today, drawing widespread concern from citizens and authorities alike
The Moga police rescued a teenage girl reportedly addicted to drugs after a disturbing video showing her under the influence went viral on social media. The girl has since been shifted to a government-run de-addiction and rehabilitation centre for treatment.
The incident came to light after a video clip surfaced online earlier today, drawing widespread concern from citizens and authorities alike. Acting promptly, a police team led by SHO City South Harpreet Singh traced the girl, identified as Raujpal Kaur, a resident of Nigaha Road in Moga.
“After verifying the video, we immediately launched an effort to locate the girl. She was found in a distressed condition and brought to Civil Hospital for initial medical attention,” SHO Harpreet Singh said. “She has now been shifted to the Kapurthala De-addiction Centre for Women for comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation.”
Police officials said the intervention reflects the district police’s focus on rehabilitation over punishment in cases involving drug users, especially minors. Authorities are working in coordination with health and social welfare departments to ensure long-term recovery and counselling for the girl, said a senior police officer.
The incident has once again highlighted the deepening drug crisis in Punjab, particularly in districts such as Moga, which has witnessed a sharp rise in substance abuse among youth over the past few years. Once largely confined to men, the menace has alarmingly begun to affect women and even teenage girls — a trend that experts say is both socially and medically devastating.
“The fact that young girls are now falling prey to this morass shows how far the drug scourge has spread,” said a local activist. “The government and society must act together — this is not just a law-and-order issue but a human tragedy.”
