Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Rajya Sabha member from Punjab, on Monday said while the government had fixed minimum support price (MSP) for various crops, the system worked only for wheat and rice.

For other crops, MSP existed only on paper, Sahney said while making his maiden speech in Parliament.

Sahney, who was taking part in the discussion on President’s address, said while the MSP fixed for corn was Rs 2,090 per quintal, it is being sold in the markets of Punjab for Rs 700 to Rs 1,000 a quintal only.

Sahney also pointed out that while Punjab made a huge contribution to the country’s food basket, there was no representative from Punjab in either the MSP committee or the Committee for Agricultural Cost and Prices. He said around 145 farmers ended life by suicide across the country every day.
