Nearly 20 days after a 7-year-old girl was found raped and dumped in fields at a nearby village, the police claimed to have arrested the accused here yesterday. The accused is a 30-year-old married man from Nepal Durgesh Kumar who was living near the house of the victim.

The victim was found dumped with severe injuries in the fields on February 9. Doctors at the Ropar Civil Hospital referred her to the PGI, Chandigarh, where she had to undergo surgery.

A case under Section 376 and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered against the accused and the police had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest.
