Nihang remanded in 7-day police custody

Having killed a youth at Gurdwara Chhevin Patshahi at Bansanwala Bazaar in Phagwara, the arrested Nihang Ramandeep Singh Mangu Math was presented before a judicial magistrate here today afternoon, who sent him to police remand till January 24.The body of the victim has been kept in the mortuary after the post-mortem examination.

Late in the evening, the Phagwara police said that the victim had been identified as Vishal Kapoor. In a press note, the police said, “He was born at Paschimpuri, Delhi. During his early years, he stayed at Phagwara for 8-10 years. He lost his father Davinder Kapoor at an early age. After that, he lived with his grandmother in Delhi. After her death, he started living as a destitute in the streets of Delhi, from where he was rescued by an NGO. He left the shelter, after which his whereabouts were unknown”.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala, Karnail Singh has appealed to the people to maintain peace and communal harmony. Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Phagwara, Jashanjeet Singh held meetings with some organisations to maintain peace after the tense atmosphere here yesterday.

On the other hand, Sikhs for Equality, Phagwara, president Sukhdev Singh has asked the police to investigate the case impartially to expose the real reason for the youth entering the gurdwara premises.
