Phulkari Women of Amritsar, in collaboration with the District Administration, launched the Nirmaya Shakti Programme to spread awareness about cervical cancer among women in border villages. The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney and Civil Surgeon of Amritsar Dr Kirandeep Kaur. The program focuses on training Asha and Anganwadi workers, who will in turn educate local communities about cervical cancer prevention.

The awareness session kicked off with a Nukkad Natak, presented by the Phulkari WOA’s Conquer Cancer team, in collaboration with BBK DAV College for Women. The initiative aims to raise awareness among students, faculty, and the wider community.

Sheetal Sohal, President of Phulkari, emphasised that cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in India. “Since cervical cancer is preventable through regular screenings and vaccinations, this event is vital in educating women about the risk factors and available preventive measures,” Sohal said.

The “Conquer Cancer” initiative, led by Phulkari WOA, has conducted 153 awareness sessions, organized 13 screening camps, educated 600,000 people, screened 1,300 women, and vaccinated 452 girls. Members of the Phulkari WOA, including Nidhi Sindhwani and Praneet Bubber, highlighted the program’s goal of ensuring accessible healthcare and prevention resources for cervical cancer.

“The ultimate aim behind these sessions is to educate communities, facilitate screenings, and ensure affordable healthcare for prevention and treatment,” Sohal concluded.
