Days after being appointed as Congress general secretary in-charge of Punjab affairs, former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel reportedly conveyed his stance on the issue of indiscipline within the state unit to party leaders.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Congress Legislative Party leader Partap Singh Bajwa, and several other party leaders met Baghel in Delhi on Tuesday.

Sources privy to the development revealed that after attending an AICC meeting in Delhi on Wednesday, Baghel was expected to hold a meeting with Punjab Congress leaders in Chandigarh next week. “The general secretary has made it clear that indiscipline in the party will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Notices may be issued to some leaders in the coming days,” the sources said.

The issue of indiscipline gained significance after recent remarks by Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh. Just two days ago, while speaking on the denial of party ticket to him from Anandpur Sahib during the 2024 LS elections, Singh had called Warring a “selfish leader”.

During his Punjab tour, Baghel is expected to meet various factions within the state unit. He is also likely to engage with a pressure group that has been advocating for Warring’s removal since his election as Ludhiana MP.

Additionally, leaders indicated that the impending reconstitution of the PPCC is expected to be finalised in the coming weeks. Baghel has reportedly sought details about the proposed reshuffle.

With high stakes for the Punjab Congress in the 2027 Assembly polls, the central party leadership has directed the general secretary in-charge to take all necessary measures to ensure the party presents a united front.
