Officials hold commemorative event for martyrs at Jallianwala Bagh
District administrative officials hosted a commemorative event at Jallianwala Bagh today to mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Attendees paid silent tributes to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Punjab Police personnel laid down their weapons and presented a guard of honour to the fallen.
Samson Masih, Secretary of the Red Cross Society, paid tribute on behalf of the district administration, stating that martyrs are the nation’s greatest asset and a continuous source of inspiration. He urged citizens to contribute to the nation’s progress in honour of their sacrifices.
During the event, former Cabinet Minister and senior BJP leader Laxmikanta Chawla expressed concern over the public’s lack of awareness about martyrs, criticising the general apathy toward their legacy. She questioned why figures like Madan Lal Dhingra and the Chapekar brothers are largely unknown to the younger generation. Chawla also voiced frustration over the absence of senior political and administrative leaders from the event, emphasising the need for greater awareness to ensure the legacy of these martyrs is preserved.
In addition to the official ceremony, Congress Councillor Vikas Soni also hosted a separate memorial event to honour Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary.
