A little more than 15 lakh voters have been registered for the upcoming general election of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) till January 30, which is around 30 per cent of 51 lakh voters, registered in 2011.
While addressing Deputy Commissioners today, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said all-out efforts should be made to enrol maximum voters till the last date, February 29.
150 new mohalla clinics soon: CM
- CM Bhagwant Mann said around 98 lakh patients have benefited from the Aam Aadmi Clinics so far
- He said medicines worth Rs 40.50 crore had been provided free to patients and 150 new clinics would be launched soon
- He said 52 packages had been identified and 495 hospitals had been empanelled for the ‘Farishtay’ scheme for road accident victims
- The government would open 13 new Schools of Eminence in Amritsar, Bathinda, Fazilka, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, SAS Nagar and Tarn Taran by March 31
- Mann said as many as 308 lakh ‘man days’ had been generated under MGNREGA, thus giving employment to 8.17 lakh households
Earlier, the voters’ registration date was from October 21 to November 15, 2023.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee is responsible for the management of gurdwaras in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.
The House currently has 191 members out of which 171 are elected. As many as 15 members are nominated from across the country and the remaining are jathedars of five Takhts and a head granthi of the Golden Temple.
The Gurudwara Election Commission (GEC) has announced that the poll would be conducted after the 2024 General Election. The last SGPC poll was held in 2011. A litigation ensued over voting rights to sehajdari Sikhs (shorn hair). After a decision in 2016, the elected members began their tenure which ended in 2022.
The registration of voters is governed by the Sikh Gurdwara Board Election Rules, 1959. The Deputy Commissioners are expected to complete the preparation of preliminary rolls by March 21. Objections can be filed till April 11. The final publication of the voters’ list will be May 3.
