The outpatient department (OPD) services will commence at the PGI Satellite Centre, Ferozepur, in November. The project was sanctioned during the fag end of the UPA-II in 2013, but it got mired in several procedural wrangles.

According to information, Rs 249 crore is likely to be incurred in the first phase. Spread over 27 acres, the PGI centre will have a total of 100 beds, 565 staffers, including doctors, paramedics and other administrative personnel.

Senior BJP Leader Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi said he had met Union Health Minister JP Nadda and requested him to get the ongoing work expedited. He added that the approval for setting up of a medical college at the PGI centre was also on the cards.

In February 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of this project virtually after his convoy was blocked by protesting farmers on January 5, 2022, due to which he had to return from the outskirts of the city.
