Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa sought the resignation of Mann, who also holds the Home portfolio, accusing him of “failing to control the rising tide of organised crime in the state”.

“The law and order situation in Punjab has plummeted to an all-time low under Bhagwant Mann’s Home Ministry. It is imperative that he takes responsibility for this crisis and resign from his position,” he said in a statement.

Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal equated the law and order situation to a “jungle raj”.

“I strongly condemn this brutal killing and offer heartfelt condolences to the Verma family. The perpetrators must be arrested immediately and brought to justice,” he said. State BJP president Sunil Jakhar expressed grief over the incident and said the incident spoke volumes about the state’s law and order. “The state government has miserably failed in checking such crimes and believes only in false publicity” he said.

Punjab Minister Aman Arora also visited victim Sanjay Verma’s house and expressed grief over the incident. Arora described the murder as a condemnable act while assuring that those behind the act would be arrested soon.

“The government will not allow gangsters to carry their nefarious activities,” he said.
