Hoshiarpur, July 20
A meeting of the CPM district committee was organised at Shaheed Sathi Channan Singh Dhoot Bhawan here today under the chairmanship of Sathi Mahinder Kumar Badhoan. During the meeting, the party’s state secretary, Sukhwinder Singh Sekhon, said they would continue to oppose laws passed by the BJP government ‘unconstitutionally’ on July 1. They said the BJP implemented the laws without opposition as they threw out 150 MPs.
Sekhon said the central committee of the party said the BJP received a big blow in the recently held general election. He said people gave a wakeup call to the BJP to protect the Constitution. He said the India Alliance won 234 seats, 38 short of a majority.
Lashing out at the BJP, Sekhon said that during elections, the BJP used weapons to target opposition parties and attacks on minorities for communal polarisation, but to no avail. He said the centre was the NDA; however, the BJP had kept key ministries of the cabinet.
He said that the laws passed by the BJP government on July 1 were without opposition as they had thrown 150 MPs out of Parliament. He said the CPM would continue to oppose the laws.
Speaking about the Punjab elections, he said the BJP would lose by a big margin; however, the voting percentage was a cause for concern. He added that two pro-Khalistan candidates winning in the state in the general election was not a good sign.
Addressing mediapersons, the district secretary, Gurnek Singh Bajjal, said the party’s organisational elections would be held in September. He said the party’s tehsil conferences would be held on September 26 in Dasuya, October 10 in Hoshiarpur, October 20 in Garhshankar, and October 25 in Mukerian. He added that on August 1, comrades from across the district would arrive in Chandigarh on the occasion of Harkishan Singh Surjit’s death anniversary.
