Sub-Inspector (SI) Balwinder Singh was injured in an attack by a mob when a police party led by him went to the district’s Jhandeana Sharki village to arrest Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) constable Sarabjit Singh, a rape accused.

At least, six villagers were also injured in the clash. They have been admitted to a government hospital in Dhudike village.

When the police arrested Sarabjit from his house, members of his family and villagers attacked them. In the melee, villagers managed to free Sarabjit.

Police officials said more than 35 people attacked the police and freed Sarabjit. Villagers, however, alleged the police first attacked them and they retaliated in defence.

The Sub-Inspector sustained minor injuries; a police vehicle was damaged. On getting information of the attack, another team of policemen was rushed to the spot to control the situation.

The police said Sarabjit Singh and 30 others had been booked under Sections 353, 186, 323, 353, 148 and 149 IPC. Sarabjit was earlier booked for allegedly raping a 24-year old woman of nearby Dhudike village on the pretext of marriage. He knew the woman since schooldays. — TNS
