Bridge collapses

A bridge constructed on Sirhind feeder near Jhamke village in Makhu block, connecting three villages, collapsed in the morning due to heavy water flow and blockage caused by hyacinth. Manpreet Singh Sarpanch of Jhamke village said Jhamke, Mithe and Ghuddu Wala now stood completely disconnected.

“The bridge was in poor condition and needed maintenance. Residents had been repeatedly raising the issue with officials, but no action was taken. The presence of hyacinth, which should have been cleared long ago, disrupted the flow of water,” he said.

Manpreet said that the bridges at Keemewali and Jattanwali villages were also in poor shape and could meet a similar fate if immediate remedial measures were not taken.

Flood water has also inundated various BSF border outposts along the India-Pakistan border. “The BSF soldiers are on high alert, especially in those areas where the fencing has been completely submerged,” said an official.
