The protesters sought work in the state foodgrain procurement agencies without any tender and security. The sangharsh committee handed over a memorandum to a senior official in this regard.

  • Palledars said instead of making payment through contractual labour system, the procurement agencies should pay directly by forming a three-member committee at each depot

Satnam Singh, vice-president, Punjab Pradesh Palledar Mazdoor Union, said the state government had earlier promised that labour work in the foodgrain procurement agencies would be given to the palledar unions without tender and security. However, the government has backtracked from its promise and has implemented a policy which is “anti-labour” and not accepted to us, he said.

Satnam added that instead of making payment to palledars through contractual labour system, the state’s procurement agencies should pay directly by forming a three-member committee of palledars at each depot. Besides, the palledar unions should be recognised by the state government, he said.

Demanding abolition of contractual labour system, the protesters said if the “anti-labour” policy would not be scrapped by the government, they would intensify their agitation.

Joginder Singh, Darshan Singh, Bhola Singh, Rampal Singh and Raghbir Singh among others were present on the occasion.
