An alleged incident of witchcraft triggered panic among inmates of a girls’ hostel at Punjabi University here, prompting the warden to issue a warning.

Some students had spotted a lemon suspiciously placed inside a circle drawn on ground on Thursday morning. They reportedly told the hostel warden that such activities had been noticed earlier too. The hostel warden, Harpreet, brought the incident to the notice of the university authorities.

In a notice issued after the incident, the warden warned of strict action if anyone was found indulging in such practices. The warden, however, wasn’t available for comments.

University Registrar Sanjiv Puri said he was not aware of any such letter being issued. “I will look into the matter,” he said. Despite repeated attempts, Dean Academic Affairs Narinder Kaur Multani could not be contacted. Director Student Welfare Monica Chawla refused to comment on the incident.
