A portion of a solid structure built into the riverbank to prevent erosion was washed away near the Harike headworks on Thursday, prompting the authorities to launch immediate repairs with the Sutlej water flowing above the danger mark in the area.

Irrigation Department XEN Sahil said their staff and local villagers were working together to strengthen the riverbank.

The Sutlej is overflowing for the past three days, inundating vast swathes of land here. Deputy Commissioner Rahul said 2.62 lakh cusecs of water was being discharged from the headworks after the water level crossed the danger mark.
