The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has issued an advisory to manage fall armyworm, an invasive insect-pest, which has been infesting maize.

Dr PK Chhuneja, Head, Department of Entomology (PAU), said the incidence of fall armyworm on timely sown grain maize has been little.

However, based on the last years’ experience, its incidence in the coming days on fodder maize is imminent, he said and added that farmers have been asked to regularly survey their fields, especially the late sown crop.

During the regular survey, egg masses and younger larval instars can be collected and destroyed manually. Weather conditions in September to October are favourable for the infestation by this pest, he said.
