Phagwara under alert: ADC issues advisory amid heavy rainfall and waterlogging
In view of the continuous rainfall and the forecast issued by Meteorological Department, Additional Deputy Commissioner Phagwara, Dr Akshita Gupta, has issued an advisory for the residents of Phagwara. Dr Gupta stated that due to the persistent rains, the condition of rivers, canals, and low-lying areas is critical. She appealed to the public to avoid using unpaved roads, temporary pathways, and areas near drains or streams in villages and to refrain from unnecessary travel.
The advisory comes in the wake of waterlogging reported in several low-lying villages of Phagwara since Sunday, when videos went viral of residents walking amidst inundated roads — a result of a breach in a seasonal rivulet that also flows in adjoining Chabbewal.
The ADC urged residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions, including, ensuring no water stagnates on rooftops, reporting houses in extremely weak condition to the authorities so that safety arrangements can be made, keeping livestock at higher and safer places to prevent loss due to flooding, and staying cautious in vulnerable areas and keeping necessary items ready in case of evacuation.
The ADC further informed that a Control Room has been set up at Phagwara, which will function 24x7 to respond to emergencies. A helpline number (01824-260794) will be available for citizens to seek assistance. Waterlogging and flood-prone areas are being constantly monitored by the district administration.
Dr Gupta assured that the administration is working round the clock to ensure the safety of every resident and urged people to cooperate with the administration during this crucial time.
