Abohar, July 24

Sriganganagar Municipal Council today got a leading mobile phone service provider’s tall tower pole installed at Bhagat Singh Chowk removed in the presence of hundreds of people. The MC officials said the tower was erected at a distance of 325 metres from the district jail, in violation of the 500-metre distance rules.

With the help of two JCBs, the tower was brought down after about three hours of hardwork. Municipal Council Commissioner Yashpal Ahuja said that despite the cancellation of required permissions, the tower was erected.

A few days ago, a foundation for the tower of a private phone company was built by breaking the divider near the chowk. MC officials said they permitted the company to install the tower in front of the girls’ college; however, the company prepared to install it on the divided Ravindra Path.

Residents of the area began a protest as soon as they got to know that the phone tower was being erected at the chowk. In view of the opposition, the MC stopped the installation of the tower, and the necessary permissions for the tower were also cancelled. Officials of the Municipal Council said, despite the cancellation, the company erected the tower last night.

The Municipal Council Commissioner, Yashpal Ahuja and other officials reached the spot. When Ahuja called the company officials, he was informed that they had gone to Jodhpur after the installation of the tower. Thus, he called a JCB machine to the spot to bring the tower down. The traffic was diverted, and the electricity was switched off. After about three hours of hard work, the tower was brought down.
