Prof Kulwant Singh Grewal, famous as the people’s poet and a Shiromani Punjabi awardee, breathed his last at a hospital in Patiala on Thursday. He was 81.
Known for his books, including ‘Tera ambran ch naa likhya’ and ‘Putt daryawan de’, the former Director, Punjabi Development Department at Punjabi University was much loved for his poetry that resonated with the general folk.
“One of his most loved works of poetry remembered by his contemporaries is Dil tutde hawawan de, boond boond taras gaye asin putt daryawan de that he wrote in 1957,” former head, Department of Journalism, Punjabi University, Dr Harjinder Walia said. He said Prof Grewal was also as a Sikh scholar.
He was a member of ‘bhootwara’, a scholars’ group in Patiala city, which included the likes of Dr Dalip Kaur Tiwana, Satinder Singh Noor, Harinder Memboob, Hardaljit Singh Lali and other literary personalities.
He came from Sakrodi Singha village in Bhawanigarh and later shifted to Patiala as his father worked at the palace of the Maharaja of Patiala. He also translated Guru Granth Sahib in Bangla and authored eight books in English, Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi.
He was awarded the Dhaliwal Award in poetry. — TNS
