Police launch campaign against drug abuse, gain support from local leaders
Office-bearers and activists of various outfits vowed to associate with the campaign launched by the Malerkotla police against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, which have since emerged as breeding grounds for all other social evils.
An oath was taken in response to a call made by the Malerkotla police, supervised by SSP Gagan Ajit Singh, during the concluding sessions of events held at various places in the region.
DSP Ahmedgarh Rajan Sharma, DSP Amargarh Davinder Singh Sandhu, DSP Malerkotla Kuldeep Singh, and DSP (Special) Ranjit Singh monitored the progress of the campaign, which is part of a state-level initiative.
Office bearers and activists of some Muslim outfits, led by Councilor Aman Afridi, announced they would act as brand ambassadors of the campaign, playing an active role during events drafted as part of a proactive and preventive strategy to spread awareness about the causes and consequences of drug abuse and drug peddling. They also offered to provide relevant information about drug peddlers and their sympathizers. SHO City Ahmedgarh Aditya Sharma and SHO Sadar Sukhwinder Singh Khurad chaired events held in their respective areas.
Muslim preachers, led by Mufti Bisharat Rashidi and Qari Furkan Ahmed, acknowledged that Islam, like other religions practiced in India, did not allow the consumption of any type of drug or narcotic.
Appreciating the gesture shown by residents of the region toward the coordinated movement launched by the police against drug abuse, SSP Gagan Ajit Singh claimed that office bearers of various organisations, including Muslim outfits, had announced they would work in tandem with the police against the menace of drug abuse that has ruined many families in the state.
“Having learned about the revamping of the campaign under the supervision of our DGP Gaurav Yadav, most of the organisations have announced plans to participate in events scheduled to take place in the future,” said Singh, appreciating that leaders of various organisations had comprehended that drug abuse could not be tackled without the support of local residents.
Singh added that the district police had been advised to launch a fresh crackdown with the help of local residents and leaders.
