Police team attacked during Dinanagar raid
A couple involved in drug trafficking attacked a police party that had gone to arrest them on Tuesday. Four cops are said to have sustained ‘injuries’ in the melee.
The couple, Jodh Lal, alias Jodha, and Vandana, used household articles as projectiles to launch an attack on cops. However, SSP Aditya said no police personnel had sustained injuries during the raid. His version runs counter to DSP Kapil Kaushal’s statement that one cop has been injured.
A CIA team and cops from the Dinanagar police station had reached the site to “take out the drug smugglers”.
“Both Jodh and Vandana were in the business of selling drugs, especially to the youngsters,” said a resident.
The windows of a police car, too, were shattered. The news spread like wildfire in the town giving rise to different types of rumours. This is for the second time that the couple has attacked the police when the latter went to search for drugs at their house.
High drama was enacted for several hours as cops were hard pressed to find a way to arrest the couple in the face of a fierce onslaught. With projectiles coming out of the house with impunity, police personnel tried hard to find a way to nab them, but without much success.
After four hours, Jodh rushed to the roof of his house carrying a domestic LPG cylinder, vociferously claiming “he would burn himself and his wife and the police would be blamed for their deaths”.
At this stage, DSP Kaushal managed to reach the rooftop and got hold of Jodh. His wife tried to escape but she, too, was nabbed.
Neighbours and passersby reached in strength at Awankhi mohalla where the drama was going on. The police had a hard time controlling the surging crowd.
When the cops tried to enter the house, Jodh set his autorickshaw on fire just near the entrance. DSP Kaushal said an attempt to murder case had been registered at the Dinanagar police station.
