The work on government colleges in Abohar subdivision is set to be completed by the year-end. However, admissions have started at the colleges, which will temporarily run from the transit campuses.

Pradeep Singh, a senior lecturer at Rajendra Government College, Fazilka, has been deployed as in charge of admissions here.

The colleges were promised by the Congress during the Vidhan Sabha elections in 2017. Earlier, children of poor families had to cover 32 km to pursue higher studies at Fazilka’s government college.

Last year, the state government had arranged the land for the college in the Canal Colony complex here. On January 12, 2020, the foundation stone was laid. As the construction of the building here was likely to be completed by the year-end, the college will temporarily function from the complex of Government Senior Secondary Boys Smart School, here. Another government college will have a transit camp in Khubban village.

Sham Lal Arora, senior state vice-president, Recognised and Affiliated Schools’ Association, said the opening of the government college would bring relief to families, who could not afford the expenses of private institutions.
