Postal stamp to be issued on 2,900th birth anniv of Tirthankara Parshwanath
A commemorative postage stamp will be issued by the Government of India on the occasion of the 2,900th birth anniversary and 2,800th Nirvana Utsav festival year of Tirthankara Parshwanath, the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism.
On December 25, the 2,900th birth anniversary of Tirthankara Parshwanath, Kalyanak Mahotsav would be celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country, Shraman Pushpendra, a religious leader, said today.
Union Communications and North Eastern Region Development Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, in a letter to the BJP Raipur MP Brijmohan Agarwal, confirmed the decision.
The Jain community had urged Scindia to issue a commemorative postage stamp on Tirthankara Parshwanath.
Shraman Pushpendra said the life of Tirthankara Parshwanath was considered an ideal of non-violence and compassion. Waving the flag of non-violence all over India for 70 years Tirthankara Parshwanath awakened and enlightened every living being, he said. By eliminating superstitions, evil practices and devious inertia, by lighting the lamp of Samyagdarshan in every home, they showed the path of non-violence, truth, self-interest and non-possessiveness, issuing a postage stamp on them was a matter of joy and pride for the entire Jain community, he added.
The first postage stamp on Jainism was issued by the government on May 6, 1935, which bore the image of the Shital Nath Jain Temple in Calcutta. This temple was built in 1868 and is famous for the artistic work of mirrors and enamel on its walls and ceiling. This stamp was part of a set of four stamps of temples and shrines issued to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the reign of King George V.
