Less than two years after Justice Harpreet Singh Brar was sworn in as an Additional Judge, the President of India has appointed him as a permanent Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
As of now, the high court has 51 judges against the sanctioned strength of 85.
Justice Brar was sworn in as an Additional Judge on April 10, 2023. Born on December 20, 1975, Justice Brar comes from a family with deep legal roots. His father, Gurbachan Singh Brar, served as Deputy District Attorney and Additional Advocate-General for Punjab.
Justice Brar completed his matriculation from DAV High School, Sri Muktsar Sahib, in 1990 and earned his BA degree from Panjab University in 1995. He later pursued a Bachelor of Laws degree and completed that in 1999.
Enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in May 2000, Justice Brar built an illustrious legal career. He served as Punjab Additional Advocate-General from 2009 to 2014 and as panel counsel for multiple state bodies, including Punjab Urban Planning & Development Authority, Punjab Pollution Control Board and the Punjab Energy Development Agency.
Justice Brar was elected as member of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana for three consecutive terms and served twice as its honorary secretary. In 2019, he was unanimously elected chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana. Additionally, he held the position of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association president for two consecutive terms (2015-2017).
