Protests against Emergency lead to show cancellations in Sriganganagar
The screening of the controversial movie Emergency was cancelled in Sriganganagar last night following strong protests by Sikh groups.
Tejinderpal Singh Timma, Chairman of the Dharam Prachar Committee of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) in Rajasthan, stated today that any film that spreads hatred against religion or communities will face strong opposition. The movie, starring BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, was being screened at PVR in Riddhi Siddhi Colony and Gold Cinema Hall in Srinath Enclave.
Under Timma’s leadership, members of various Sikh organisations gathered at both cinema halls last night to protest the film. The police were also called to the scene, and as a result, the screenings were cancelled.
Timma claimed that the Sikh protests led to the cancellation of the shows, with many disappointed viewers being sent home. He criticised the film for portraying harmful scenes against the Sikh community, calling it an attempt to tarnish their image. He vowed that any film fostering hatred between religions or sects would be met with strong opposition.
“We will not allow anyone to destroy the unity of our country, which is a bouquet of various faiths and beliefs,” he said.
Timma further emphasised the significant role of the Sikh community in India’s independence struggle, adding that any effort to spread hatred against Sikhs for political or financial gain would be strongly opposed. He also declared that the screening of Emergency would not be allowed in the future.
