Protests erupt over posting of officer linked to Behbal Kalan firing case to Faridkot

The Behbal Kalan Insaaf Morcha and the families of victims of the 2015 police firing have strongly objected to the appointment of a police officer allegedly involved in the incident to a senior post in Faridkot.

Sukhraj Singh Niamiwala, a key leader of the Morcha, accused the Punjab government of weakening the case by failing to pursue it with seriousness in court. He alleged that the recent posting of a Superintendent of Police (SP)—who was part of the police team during the 2015 firing—to Faridkot is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the prosecution and intimidate witnesses.

“The government is deliberately deploying officers accused in the Behbal Kalan firing incident to Faridkot to monitor and possibly influence the proceedings. It is unacceptable that such officers are not only being promoted but also being posted in sensitive locations directly linked to the case,” said Niamiwala.

He criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for failing to fulfil its promises of justice made before coming to power.

“Three years into their tenure, the government has not even filed the final chargesheet in the Behbal Kalan case,” Niamiwala said.

He further alleged that while issues of sacrilege and justice were central to AAP’s campaign, the government has taken no concrete steps to resolve the case or hold the guilty accountable.

The controversial appointment of the SP—after being promoted—amid ongoing investigations and heightened public sentiment has renewed demands for transparency and accountability in the high-profile case, he said.
