A CBI court has directed the Superintendent, Central Jail, Patiala, to provide medical care to convicted Punjab Police cop Suba Singh after his family refused to take custody of him.

The court directed the jail authorities to execute the release warrant as and when the convict was in a fit medical condition and till then, provide him proper medical aid as per the Patiala jail rules and manual.

Anmol Narang, lead public prosecutor for the CBI, said the file was taken up again after the receipt of an application through email from the Superintendent, Central Jail, Patiala, intimating that convict Suba Singh, whose release warrants were issued by this court on September 10, was admitted to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, in an unconscious condition and his legal heirs had refused to take his custody.

Three convicted retired Punjab Police officers — former DSP Gurbachan Singh, and former inspectors Suba Singh and Inderjit Singh — were attacked with sharp cutlery by Sandeep Singh, alias Sunny, an accused in the murder of Hindu leader Sudhir Suri, on Wednesday inside Patiala Central Jail. Sunny suspected that the former police officers were informing the jail authorities about his activities.

Suba Singh sustained deep facial injuries and was taken to Rajindra Hospital, while the other two were under medical observation.

Suba Singh was sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in a 1993 case of a fake encounter of seven persons in Tarn Taran on August 5, while Gurbachan Singh was sentenced to life term in a 32-year-old fake encounter case on December 25, 2024.
