Amid rising COVID-19 cases in the state, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family of an accredited journalist who succumbed to the virus.
The decision comes after the death of the 28-year-old journalist, who was working with a vernacular daily in Patiala, succumbed to coronavirus on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Government Rajindra Hospital.
The journalist was admitted to the hospital on August 20 with breathlessness.
The doctors at the hospital said that he was on ventilator support from the last couple of days.
Patiala has been seeing a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths.
Jai Deep who was earlier working with Dainik Bhaskar and Dainik Savera Group lost his life within days of being infected with coronavirus.
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister described Jai Deep as an upright journalist committed to his profession. He was a fine photographer with an astute sense of the nuances of photojournalism, said Capt Amarinder.
