Punjab Diary: MLA Sherry Kalsi learning tricks of the trade

Batala: MLA Sherry Kalsi is learning the tricks of the trade the hard way. This legislator is the new kid on the block of Majha politics. A little green behind the ears, Kalsi was reprimanded by Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan in the Assembly recently during the Zero Hour for asking an “irrelevant question”. When Kalsi tried to belittle a rival politician he was stopped dead in his tracks by the Speaker. The young man surely could do better by taking coaching from some of his seniors. In any case, he gave enough ammunition to his rivals to blast him left, right and centre on his Assembly fiasco.

AAP poster eyesore for commuters

Amritsar: Much to the apathy of the civic authorities, an illegal poster of an AAP leader has come up on a direction board near Lawrence Road Chowk. The poster has been hanging there since the AAP won the Assembly poll and came into power. Ironically, no authority has taken cognisance of the incident. The poster, however, has turned it into an eyesore for commuters plying from Mall Road to Lawrence Road Chowk.

Verka gets a push

Gurdaspur: These days former Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa is a much worried man. When he was the Cooperation Minister, he nurtured Verka milk product brand with kid gloves. To develop the brand further, he had even visited Gujarat to study Amul. He wanted to get first-hand knowledge of how in the 70s Amul had become the world’s largest producer of milk products. When Randhawa got to know that Amul was planning to spread its wings in Punjab, he brought up the question in the Vidhan Sabha. He even managed to get an assurance from Cabinet minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal that Amul would not be allowed in Punjab. Round one goes to Randhawa.

Old hoardings of Warring still dot Muktsar

Muktsar: Nearly four months have passed after the change of guard in the state, but PCC chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring is still the Transport Minister in his hometown Muktsar. Courtesy: The boards installed in the past by the local municipal council near his residence. Surprisingly, these boards have not yet caught the attention of the MC or any AAP leader.

An ode to women achievers

Ferozepur: In an initiative to empower women, the district administration on Sunday christened a prominent road as “Nari Shakti Marg”, wherein portraits of distinguished women of this border town have been placed. DC Amrit Singh said these women had broken the glass ceiling and created landmarks in various fields. “As an ode to them, this road has been dedicated to highlight their achievements so that they become an inspiration for other young girls of the region.” District programme officer Rattandeep Sandhu said it was their endeavour to portray positive stories of women from the district under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.
