Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema on Monday announced that no MHCs, commonly known as ‘munshi’, at police stations will be allowed to serve at one station for more than two years.

The decision, part of the AAP government's ongoing anti-corruption campaign, seeks to prevent the long tenure of munshis, which the government believes makes them susceptible to corrupt practices.

Cheema stated that 191 munshis, who had been posted at their respective police stations for over two years, were transferred on Monday as part of the initiative.

The move follows a similar action taken by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in June last year, when 10,000 police officers posted in border districts were transferred due to concerns about their possible involvement with drug smugglers. However, most of these officers were later reinstated to their original postings.

Cheema also drew a parallel between the crackdown on police munshis and previous actions against officials in the revenue department, including Tehsildars and Patwaris, who were also indulging in corrupt practices.
