Chandigarh, August 14
In his message on the eve of Independence Day, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria cautioned the people about Pakistan’s “nefarious designs” of fighting a proxy war by pushing drugs and weapons in the state.
“The Government of India and the Punjab Government have started joint operations to counter anti-national activities from across the border. Village-level defence committees have been formed in all border districts that inform the police and defence forces about the activities of anti-social and anti-national elements in border districts. I have decided to give Rs 36 lakh annual award money from my discretionary quota to the first three best border village-level committees in six border districts based on their performance in eradicating drugs in their villages.”
“Apart from that, the Raj Bhawan has started a tradition of honouring meritorious students from Punjab and Chandigarh with an aim to appreciate their hard work and achievements,” he added. During the fag end of the previous Governor’s tenure, Mann had objected to the Governor giving funds to the village committees.
