The Punjab government has identified 40 schools to introduce four new vocational courses, dealing with digital marketing, financial services and insurance, healthcare, and beauty and wellness, at the senior secondary level.

Under the Hunar Sikhiya Schools programme, the state government would enrol 6,400 students in Class XI in the current financial year, with each school having 160 seats under the four courses put together.

Every student will have to undergo three foundational courses under which they will be taught communication skills, soft skills, and the use of digital tools.

Education Minister Harjot Bains said the courses have been designed in collaboration with industry experts, many of whom belong to the Indian Institute of Delhi, Cambridge University Press and Assessment and Max Healthcare.

“There will be 160 seats in each school. Every year, 6,400 trained students will roll out from the schools,” said a senior government functionary handling a pilot project.
