Punjab sprinter shatters national record, Akal Takht urges SGPC to honour him
Punjab’s sprinter Gurindervir Singh has made history as India’s fastest runner, clocking a record time of 10.20 seconds in men’s 100m at the Indian Grand Prix 1 in Bengaluru, breaking the previous record of 10.23 seconds set by Manikanta Hoblidhar. His remarkable achievement has captured the attention of Akal Takht, which has now recommended the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to honour him.
Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj spoke out against the negative image that has been unfairly projected about Punjab, particularly the drug menace that has plagued the state. “Punjab has been defamed with the tag of ‘udhta Punjab’ (flying Punjab),” he said. “But Gurindervir has proven that Punjab is still ‘dorhda Punjab’ in ‘charhdi kala’ (full of spirit).”
Giani Gargaj emphasised that despite the challenges faced by the state, particularly in its remote areas, the youth of Punjab is full of potential. He urged the community to draw inspiration from Gurindervir, who has not only achieved global recognition but also maintained his commitment to his religious principles.
Giani Gargaj has officially recommended that the SGPC honour Gurindervir Singh for his dedication and accomplishments, recognising him as a role model for the younger generation.
Gurindervir, a sprinter from the small village Patial of Bhogpur town in Jalandhar, has an impressive list of accolades, including a gold medal at the 2017 Youth Asia Championships, a silver at the 2019 South Asian Games, and a bronze in the 2018 Junior Asia Championships in the relay event. He also secured a gold at the Euro-Asian Championships.
Currently serving with the Indian Navy, Gurindervir’s talent was nurtured when Reliance selected him for specialised training in Mumbai under English coach James Hiller six months ago.
His remarkable feat is not just a personal victory, but a proud moment for all Punjabis, reaffirming that determination and discipline can overcome any obstacle.
