Chandigarh, July 30
The Education Ministry has commenced the process for releasing over Rs 500 crore to Punjab after the state agreed to implement the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM Shri) scheme.
Confirming the development, State Education Secretary KK Yadav said, “Our team that visited the Education Ministry office has been assured about an immediate release of the amount.”
Punjab had earlier opted out of the project despite confirming its participation by signing a memorandum of understanding with the Union Education Ministry.
The state government had, very recently, written to the Centre showing its willingness to work on the project under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. The state was forced to write because “everything, from books, construction of new buildings and classrooms were affected”. The PM Shri scheme aims at upgrading government schools into “exemplar” institutions where the National Education Policy, 2020, would be showcased. — TNS
