Punjabi compulsory in Punjab schools up to Class X

Punjabi has been made a compulsory subject for all students from Class I to X in the state, said Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi today.
He tweeted: “To promote mother tongue, Punjabi has been made a compulsory subject for all students from Class I to X in Punjab. Schools to be fined up to Rs 2 lakh for violation. Now, Punjabi is mandatory in offices. Also, Punjabi will be written on top of all boards in the state.” The tweet comes after the state Assembly passed the Punjab Learning of Punjabi and Other Language (Amendment) Bill, 2021, yesterday. Clause (e) of Section 2 of the Act says the term “school” includes any primary school, middle school, high school and senior secondary school, established and maintained by the state government or a local body or panchayat, society or trust or such other schools, as notified by the state government from time to time. It may also be mentioned that in pursuance of the aforesaid definition, the state government, vide notification dated March 22, 2010, has already notified “that Central Schools, Navodya Schools and all schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education and Indian Council of Secondary Education situated in the state of Punjab to be schools for the purposes of the said Act”. — TNS
