Rajasthan Irrigation Minister Suresh Singh Rawat has assured Sriganganagar MLAs and leaders of the Gramin Kisan Mazdoor Samiti (GKS) that he, along with senior officials of the department, would visit Fazilka and Ferozepur districts to acquaint himself of the ground realities about the Gang Canal, Ferozepur feeder and Indira Gandhi canal to resolve the longstanding demand for effective water management.
GKS president Ranjit Singh Raju today said the problems relating to the canals that originate from Punjab were discussed in detail at a meeting with the minister at his office in Jaipur last evening. Sriganganagar district in-charge and Minister Sumit Godara, Sadulshehar MLA Gurveer Singh Brar and Irrigation Department Chief Engineer (General) Amarjit Singh Mehra, along with GKS state secretary Santveer Singh Mohanpura, Gang Canal Project Chairman Harvinder Singh Gill, MK-TK Canal Chairman Bohad Singh, feeder canal Chairman Gulab Singh, GG Canal Chairman Labh Singh Brar and GKS Sriganganagar district president Ram Kumar Saharan, were present at the meeting.
The farmers demanded 2,500 cusecs of water in the Gang Canal as per share be ensured and reconstruction of the Ferozepur feeder be completed. The Rajasthan Government in February 2022, had approved Rs 200 crore for the renovation of the feeder canal that emanates from the Harike barrage. A survey indicated that the lining of the feeder canal had collapsed at several places. The feeder canal has been running below the capacity to carry 6,000 cusecs of water.
