Highlighting the urgent need for crop diversification, Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh today strongly advocated shifting from paddy to maize, which has vast applications in food, ethanol production and livestock feed.

To support this transition, he and his son, Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Rana Inder Pratap Singh, pledged to buy all maize stock at the minimum support price (MSP) for the next two years, urging the government to step up its support to farmers.

Unveiling “Nawi Soch, Nawa Punjab”, a platform to make a shift in the state’s agriculture to a remunerative and profitable avocation, in Jaito, Rana Gurjeet Singh emphasised the urgent need to shift from traditional farming to an entrepreneurial approach while equipping Punjab’s youth with the skills needed for a better future. Raising serious concerns about Punjab’s depleting water table, Rana Gurjeet Singh, criticising excessive paddy cultivation in the state, recalled the times when Malwa’s cotton industry thrived, supporting farmers, laborers and textile mills – a cycle that was disturbed due to pink bollworm infestations.
