The arrival of a cotton-laden canter from Maharashtra triggered a controversy here on Saturday.

However, it was sent back after a strong objection from the farmers, who reported the matter to the police after they saw the canter in the local grain market.

Nirmal Singh Jasseana, a farmer leader, said, “Cotton is fetching high price here thus a local commission agent had brought the produce from Maharashtra for sale here. We demand action against him.”

Meanwhile, Tejinder Bansal, president, Arhtiya Association, said no agent would be allowed to bring cotton from other states. Notably, two days ago, some farmers had stopped a basmati-laden truck coming from Haryana. Though the Malout market committee officials had termed it legal, saying that the basmati crop was not purchased by the government thus anyone could sell it anywhere. — TNS
