The concrete lining of canals (Rs 9 crore project) in Abohar subdivision is nearing completion. The water supply to canals was shut on November 22 to take up the remodelling works.

Deputy Commissioner Babita Kaler said, “Agriculture in Abohar subdivision is entirely based on canal water. Underground water is considered unfit for crops here. Two phases have already been completed and work on the third phase is under way.”

Water Resources Department executive engineer (XEN) Ramanjit Singh said Malukpura canal was being paved from burji number 95,500 to 1,15,500. Similarly, Daulatpura minor (sub canal) from burji number 0 to 20,000 has been reconstructed. Gidderanwali minor has been remodelled from burji number 0 to 11,546 and Jandwala minor from burji number 11,625 to 19,500. Besides the work on remodelling of Ramsara canal was also being carried out.

Instead of paving the canals with bricks, concrete was being used. Water would be released soon after the completion of works.

Jagdev Singh Brar, a progressive farmer of Daulatpura village, said six sub canals were reconstructed using modern technology last year for which the state government had sanctioned Rs 25 crore.

Balbir Singh of Danewala Satkosi village said most of the sub canals were constructed during the tenure of Balram Jakhar. Abohar canal was last strengthened when Beant Singh was the Chief Minister.
