Chitranjan Singh, a retired 79-year-old government teacher, has undertaken a remarkable pilgrimage to pay homage to elder Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, preaching humbleness and self-discipline along the way.
Singh pedalled 175 km to visit Chamkaur Dee Garhi and returned on the same day, braving harsh weather during the sacred journey.
“Though I have been visiting the Chamkaur Sahib every year on some public transport, this time I wanted to spread awareness about need of observing humbleness and self-penance while paying obeisance at Garhi Sahib embodying supreme sacrifice of Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh embracing martyrdom at the age of 18 and 14 respectively,” he said.
Singh emphasised the importance of sobriety during pilgrimages, urging Sikh organisations to campaign for disciplined and meaningful tributes to Sahibzadas.
“While we set out on a journey to pay tributes to Baba Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh, we must remember that the Sahibzadas had chosen to suffer death rather than renounce their faith, a symptom of true martyr,” Singh remarked.
A postgraduate in yoga science, Singh expressed dismay over the trend among youth to treat sacred pilgrimages as casual outings, detracting from the solemnity of the occasion.
