Ropar farmers remove power e-meters
Ropar, February 2
Members of the Kisan Union (Sher-e-Punjab) on Friday protested against the installation of smart electricity meters.
The protesters removed two smart meters at Mianpur village and one at Maadpur village and handed them over to the authorities.
They said the government would force them to pay in advance for power consumption and fear that the Electricity Department will be handed over to private companies.
On January 24, a mahapanchayat of farmers’ union had cautioned the authorities over installing smart meters.
Union leader Kulwinder Singh Panjola said farm leaders had held meetings with three cabinet ministers over the issue but nothing had been done in this regard so far. Harwinder Singh Bhattal, XEN, PSPCL, said farmers had some unfounded apprehensions regarding the smart meters.
