The alleged incident took place when the Guru Granth Sahib was being taken for a religious ceremony at a devotee’s residence.
The granthis were preparing to carry the sacred “saroop” when the youth, identified as Lalit, a resident of the same village, reached the shrine, allegedly in an inebriated condition.
The accused allegedly attempted to pull the sacred cloth covering the Guru Granth Sahib. Ranjit Singh, one of the granthis, immediately intervened and prevented any harm, following which villagers apprehended the youth and informed the police.
Guruharsahai DSP Rajbir Singh said the police had taken the accused into custody and initiated legal proceedings.
He said the matter was being investigated from all angles and strict action would be taken against anyone found involved in the incident.
