The state government has imposed a ban on the sale of energy drinks to minors. The directive, aimed at protecting the health and well-being of school-going children, was issued by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) under the Department of Health & Family Welfare on Friday. It prohibits the sale of energy drinks in and around educational institutions across the state.

As per a letter issued by FDA Commissioner Dilraj Singh, the sale of energy drinks has been banned in school canteens, tuck shops and commercial establishments located within 100 m radius of schools in rural areas and 50 m radius in urban areas. The prohibition will remain in force for one year.

The move follows concerns that food business operators (FBOs) were selling energy drinks to children, despite product labels clearly stating these are “not recommended for children”. These beverages often contain high levels of caffeine and other stimulants like guarana, taurine, ginseng, inositol and vitamin-B, which can adversely impact children’s physical and mental health. Health experts have flagged the risks of excessive caffeine intake by children, including increased heart rate, anxiety, gastrointestinal disturbances and even kidney issues.

The FDA Commissioner has circulated the directive to key authorities, including school education officials, district officials and food safety personnel. They have been asked to enforce the order strictly.
