Sangrur jail DSP held for ‘handing over’ heroin, mobiles to inmates
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Security) of the Sangrur district jail, Gurpreet Singh, was arrested by the police on May 13 for allegedly “handing over” 25 gm of heroin and two mobile phones to inmates in the jail.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sangrur, Sartaj Singh Chahal, said here today that later the accused was produced in a local court that remanded him in judicial custody.
The SSP also said that in this drug racket case, as many as 19 persons had been arrested by the Sangrur police so far, while further probe was on.
The arrested DSP (Security) had been lodged in Barnala jail as he was posted in the Sangrur jail before his arrest, he added.
The SSP further said that his name had been added to the FIR, already registered on April 27 at the City-1 police station, Sangrur, under Section 18 of the NDPS Act and Section 52-A of the Prison Act against eight jail inmates following a raid by the police in the jail.
During the raid, the police had seized 50 gm of opium, nine mobile phones, four smart watches, four chargers and two head phones etc. After the arrest of the DSP (Security), Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act had been added in the already registered FIR, he added.
Giving details, SSP Chahal said during investigation, the names of three jail inmates, Gurraj Singh (Patiala), Raghubir Singh (Faridkot) and Gurchet Singh (Tarn Taran) also came to the fore as they had made connections with the DSP (Security) Gurpreet Singh about a month ago.
The SSP said a relative of the jail inmate Gurchet Singh met the DSP (Security) and gave him Rs 40,000 and also transferred Rs 26,000 through UPI into the account of a family member of the DSP and also gave 25 gm of heroin and two mobile phones to the DSP to hand over the same to the jail inmates. After accepting money, the DSP (Security) handed over 25 grams of heroin and two mobile phones to these jail inmates, he added.
The SSP said the police had seized 12 gm of heroin (out of the 25 gm) from one jail inmate Ravi (Malerkotla) on May 8 and had also registered an FIR against him. However, the remaining 13 gm of heroin could not be traced as it was suspected that it had been consumed, he said.
