To woo voters in the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency, seniors leader of various parties have turned into foot soldiers. They have been going to houses and shops of locals to convince them to vote for their respective parties.

Dhindsas play a second fiddle

After dominating the political space of Sangrur for nearly 50 years, it’s the first time Sukhdev Dhindsa, a former MP, and his family will play second fiddle during the Sangrur bypoll by supporting BJP’s Kewal Singh Dhillon.

Enjoying the visits of VIPs to their houses and shops, locals are getting their pictures clicked with them.

“On Friday, some AAP leaders came, later Congress and BJP leaders approached me for my vote. After seeing all senior leaders of main political parties, I realised the importance of my vote,” said Mandeep Kumar, a local resident.

In towns, leaders are going to shops and houses of locals while in villages, small meetings are being organised.

“Though leaders used to come to our houses earlier also, this bypoll is different as they all want to win it. Senior leaders, including state party presidents, are visiting our shops with their candidates,” said Babbu Kumar, another resident.

In the Lok Sabha constituency, there are nine Assembly seats. The AAP has deputed eight to nine MLAs in each segment for micro management while other parties, including Congress, SAD, BJP and SAD (Amritsar), have deputed their senior leaders to contact voters.

Opposition parties appear to be soft towards each other as their main target is the AAP. The three-month tenure of the AAP government is being propagated as the “biggest failure” in the history of Punjab. “All Opposition parties know that they will lose with a huge margin. Due to this reason, they are targeting only us without any valid reasons,” said Harpal Cheema, Finance Minister.
